Screen Capture Software Review – Greenshot
Today I’d like to share with you a screen shot software application for Windows which I have been using for quite some time. The best part – it’s free!
A simple full screen shot (using the Print Screen button or capture only the active window using Alt+Print screen button) or the default Windows basic Snipping Tool may be enough for some people. However, I find I need extra annotation made directly onto the screen capture to describe my thoughts to specific areas of the image. I also have some criteria – windows operating system based and free for commercial use. After trawling through the internet, I finally settle an open source software called Greenshot.
Best part of Greenshot
- Integrates automatically with the Print Screen keyboard button;
- Variety of window capture options – from Full screen to user selected window region to capturing from top to bottom of a window in IE browser;
- Can easily remove the mouse pointer from a screen capture;
- Capture a specific area of the screen with option to crop the shot before saving;
- Easily add rectangles, ellipses, lines and arrows in different colours and weights;
- Add textbox in different fonts and sizes;
- Email screen captures to friends;
- Automatic upload and attach to Atlassian JIRA tickets or Confluence wiki page;
- Annotations remain fully editable until the screen capture has been closed;
- Obfuscate parts of the screen capture;
- Add a border or/and drop shadow around the screen capture;
- Customisable screen shot keyboard shortcuts;
- Available in other languages;
- Free to download and use, even in commercial environments.
Downside of Greenshot
- No video capture;
- No previous screen capture history;
- No numbered annotation;
- Windows OS based.
